J'

finished

Good to know

To say you are finished with someone or something, use j'en ai fini avec… (I'm done with…). J'ai terminé works too and means the same thing.

Correct
J'ai fini
What people say wrong
Je suis fini
I'm done for / I'm wrecked
The mistake to avoid. Finishing something takes avoir, because it is something you have done. Je suis fini describes the state you are in, and that state is ruined: it means you are done for, or completely wrecked. Say je suis fini after an exam and people will ask what went wrong. For a meal, a task or a book, it is always j'ai fini.

In context
