Dictionary / I rested

How to Say "I rested" in French

Je me suis reposé(e)
/ʒə mə sɥi ʁə.po.ze/
Literally: I have rested myself
Je
I
me
myself
suis
am
reposé
rested

Good to know

Neutral. Add an e if you are female, je me suis reposée, since the reflexive past agrees with the subject.

Correct
Je me suis reposé(e)
What people say wrong
Je suis resté
I stayed
The mistake to avoid. Rester and se reposer are one letter apart and mean different things. Rester is to stay; se reposer is to rest. So je suis resté à la maison means I stayed home, while je me suis reposé à la maison means I rested there. Both are plausible sentences about a weekend, which is what makes the swap so hard to catch. Nobody corrects you, they just come away with the wrong picture of your holiday. Se reposer is also reflexive, so the me is not optional.

In context

Je me suis reposé tout le week-end.
I rested all weekend.
Je suis resté à la maison hier.
I stayed home yesterday.
Repose-toi bien.
Get some good rest.
