What people say wrong
Je te supporte
I put up with you
The mistake to avoid. Supporter means to endure, to put up with, to tolerate. So je te supporte tells someone you are managing to bear their existence, the precise opposite of the encouragement you meant, and delivered at exactly the moment they needed the encouragement. The one place supporter does mean support is sport: on supporte une équipe, you support a team. For people, it is soutenir.
