J'ai hâte stands alone, or takes de plus an infinitive: j'ai hâte de te voir. Je suis impatient(e) de… is the slightly more formal version and works in writing.

J'ai hâte
What people say wrong
Je suis excité
I'm sexually aroused
The mistake to avoid. Excité almost never means enthusiasm in French. It means sexually aroused. Use j'ai hâte, literally I can't wait, or je suis impatient(e). Say the other one to a host and watch the room change temperature.
