Dictionary / I'm waiting for you

How to Say "I'm waiting for you" in French

Je t'attends
/ʒə tatɑ̃/
Literally: I you-wait
Je
I
t'
you
attends
am waiting for

Formal and plural

Formal or pluralJe vous attends

Je vous attends for someone you address formally, or for more than one person. Attendre quelqu'un also covers expecting someone: on t'attendait ! (we were expecting you!)

Correct
Je t'attends
What people say wrong
J'attends pour toi
I'm waiting on your behalf
The mistake to avoid. Attendre already contains the for. Adding pour is the single most common preposition error English speakers make in French, and it survives for years because nobody corrects it.

In context

Je t'attends devant le cinéma.
I'm waiting for you outside the cinema.
On t'attend depuis vingt minutes.
We've been waiting for you for twenty minutes.
Attends-moi !
Wait for me!
