How to learn JLPT N5 vocabulary

Learn 10 to 15 new words a day and review the old ones every day. That is enough to cover this list in about six weeks. Say each word out loud as you learn it, and move from romaji to kana as soon as you can, because the test is written in Japanese script.

The hardest part is remembering words you learned weeks ago. Spaced repetition helps with that: you review each word just before you would forget it, so you spend your time on the words you are about to lose rather than the ones you already know.

Frequently asked questions

How many words do you need for the JLPT N5?

The JLPT has not published an official vocabulary list since 2010, so every N5 list is an estimate. Most put N5 at roughly 600 to 800 words. This list has 611 core words and phrases, grouped by topic.

When is the next JLPT?

The JLPT is held twice a year, on the first Sunday of July and the first Sunday of December. The next test is on Sunday 6 December 2026. Check the exact date and deadlines with your local test centre.

Do I need to learn kanji for N5?

Some. N5 uses basic kanji such as 人, 日, 月, 山 and 水. In this list, kanji words show the hiragana reading underneath, so you can learn the word and its kanji together.

Is romaji enough to pass the JLPT N5?

No. The test is written in Japanese script, so you need to read hiragana, katakana and some kanji. Romaji is useful for pronunciation at the start, but switch it off in the quiz once you can read kana.

Can teachers use this list and quiz in class?

Yes. You can print the PDF and share it with your students, and link to this page for the quiz. Please keep the LanguaCards credit on the PDF.

Practise every word with audio

LanguaCards has all of these words in ready-made JLPT N5 packs, with audio for pronunciation and spaced repetition that brings each word back just before you would forget it. Japanese goes from N5 to N1, and there is French from A1 to C2 too.
