How to Say "I'm scared" in French
J'ai peur
/ʒe pœʁ/
Literally: I have fear
J'
I
ai
have
peur
fear
Good to know
Ça me fait peur means it scares me. J'ai un peu peur softens it to I'm a bit scared. Je suis effrayé(e) is correct too, but j'ai peur is what you will hear every day.
Correct
J'ai peur
What people say wrong
Je suis peur
Not correct French; peur is a noun, so it reads as I am fear
The mistake to avoid. Fear is something you have in French, not something you are. Je suis peur does not work, because peur is a noun. To say what scares you, add de: j'ai peur du noir, j'ai peur de tomber. Remember that de and les join to make des, so it is j'ai peur des chiens, never j'ai peur de les chiens.
In context
J'ai peur des araignées.
I'm scared of spiders.
N'aie pas peur, le chien est gentil.
Don't be scared, the dog is friendly.
J'ai peur de rater mon avion.
I'm scared I'll miss my plane.
